Formatted book to CreateSpace specs for on-demand publishing, 2017. The cover image is a photo by editor Brennan LeQuire of a nearby cornfield; cover design by Kathleen Christy. This book was published by Blount County Friends of the Library, Maryville, Tennessee, a volunteer organization to which I belong.
Foothills Voices is an anthology by twelve East Tennessee writers who share stories from their own experiences, families, and communities.
The book was formatted as a 7 by 10-inch paperback typeset in 12pt Gandhi Serif, with generous margins and leading for accessibility. Each chapter includes one or two images, and most have endnotes and a bibliography. The book has an extensive index of names and places.
Since the book is a collection of memoirs, the images are predominantly old photos, some of which required extensive restoration. After the book was formatted, it underwent a second round of editing, with hundreds of changes. Sometimes these things happen, but usually on a smaller scale. Obviously, such major last-minute revisions should be avoided whether it’s a paid or pro-bono project. In the end, the anthology was successfully published as a big beautiful book and has been very well received locally and in the region.
